Mac started making sounds before he ever made music. As a child, he'd choose a song and listen to it once per instrument, blocking out the rest of the world each time, until he understood exactly how every part fit together. He didn't know it then, but he was learning how to create music. Around the same time, a Moog version of "Amazing Grace" on Italian television convinced him that machines could make sound out of nothing but electricity, and he never really recovered from that idea.
His first instrument was a plastic toy organ nobody else in the house wanted. His first composition, "Esilio," was four chords going "stab stab stab stab" — he was sixteen. His first album, in 1982, was recorded onto a cassette he scavenged from his brother's old radio station, using a demijohn as a reverb chamber and all kinds of broken objects and junk as instruments, bounced between two tape decks until the hiss became part of the sound. For years, the only person who heard any of it was his friend RG. To this day, Mac still isn't sure how RG put up with it, but somehow RG was able to hear the potential behind the terrible results.
Mac was 19 when he first heard an album by Tangerine Dream — Ricochet, which he still considers the most beautiful thing humanity has ever created, and not just in music. Unfortunately, he didn't have any gear at all to create this kind of music, so he could only play it in his mind.
He kept making music alone for himself for years before any of it left the house. In 1998, one of his nephews was hitchhiking and was picked up by a guy who turned out to be probably the only Berlin School musician in Italy besides Mac. Incredibly enough, he also lived five minutes from Mac's home. They became BIOnighT, recording in his attic with no bathroom and his sleeping family below them, which is why they could barely hear what they were playing.
They came close to signing with the label that back then released Tangerine Dream's own records, and though that fell through, it told them they weren't just imitating their influences — they were genuinely good. The German label Syngate believed the same, and released everything they made together: a total of nine albums. BIOnighT were the very first — and for many years, the only — Italian Berlin School act in the internet era.
Even while BIOnighT was active, Mac never stopped recording on his own — Aphasia, his first officially released solo album, came out the same year BIOnighT began. When VST technology arrived in 2004, it gave him a freedom he'd never had access to before, and in 2006 he finally convinced his musical partner to move their work out of that attic and into his own home, where he still makes music today. BIOnighT ended in 2011. He still carries the name in his own, because in spite of everything, it was the one thing in his life he was truly, irreplaceably part of.
Since then, the music hasn't stopped — it's only multiplied. Albums on Bandcamp, CDr releases through the UK label Neu Harmony, some cassettes through Milan's Heimat Der Katastrophe, a vinyl compilation appearance courtesy of Fruits de Mer Records, collaborations with musicians scattered across the world, even a track from his album Black Light reborn twice — once in 6D sound, once in 3D sound.
His Classic EM series is where his Berlin School roots live, along with the Moog-born conviction that sound itself could become a kind of wonder. It isn't the only genre he makes music in — he has too many to count, and he'd suffocate inside just one — but it's certainly a very important one, one that was already waiting for him before he knew its name.
