OSC (One Synth Challenge) is an interesting competition held by Fred "Tattiemannie"
Wilkinson for the community of a forum - KVR - dedicated to electronic instruments
and
especially plug-ins, also known as "VST's" or virtual instruments and effects.
The " challenge " the name refers to is that of creating a whole track using
exclusively a free plug-in instrument for everything, from melody to drums.
A handful of plug-in effects
is allowed, providing that they are free and currently available. All this
may sound easy, but it isn't. Still, the challenge is attracting a growing number
of partecipants who are
willing to put their programming and musical skills to the test. All members
of the forum can vote, and there are prizes for the winners. However, winning
is not the main goal, as
the challenge is such a learning experience and a great way for any musician
to hone his skills that the whole thing is a reward in itself.
At the time of writing this, I've taken part in five OSC's, and this album collects
the tracks I entered in the competitions.
I only won once and yes, winning does feel good, but I had an equal amount
of fun on each and every One Synth Challenge. So, a big thank you to Tattiemannie
for being such
a great host and all the hard work he puts into this, thanks to all the
generous people who donate fantastic prizes for the winners (as I said, winning
feels good and the prizes
make it way better ;-) and, finally, thanks to all the other guys at KVR who
make this such
a pleasant and fun experience!
